چکیده

A player moving in the plane is given a sequence of instructions of the following type: at step i a planar convex set Fi is specified, and the player has to move to a point in Fi. The player is charged for the distance traveled. We provide a strategy for the player which is competitive, i.e., for any sequence Fi the cost to the player is within a constant (multiplicative) factor of the "off-line" cost (i.e., the least possible cost when all Fi are known in advance). We conjecture that similar strategies can be developed for this game in any Euclidean space and perhaps even in all metric spaces. The analogous statement where convex sets are replaced by more general families of sets in a metric space includes many on-line/off-line problems such as the k-server problem; we make some remarks on these more general problems.

Chasing Convex Bodies and Functions

We consider three related online problems: Online Convex Optimization, Convex Body Chasing, and Lazy Convex Body Chasing. In Online Convex Optimization the input is an online sequence of convex functions over some Euclidean space. In response to a function, the online algorithm can move to any destination point in the Euclidean space. The cost is the total distance moved plus the sum of the fun...

Nested Convex Bodies are Chaseable

In the Convex Body Chasing problem, we are given an initial point v0 ∈ R and an online sequence of n convex bodies F1, . . . , Fn. When we receive Fi, we are required to move inside Fi. Our goal is to minimize the total distance travelled. This fundamental online problem was first studied by Friedman and Linial (DCG 1993). They proved an Ω( √ d) lower bound on the competitive ratio, and conject...

Numerical simulation of Laminar Free Convection Heat Transfer around Isothermal Concave and Convex Body Shapes

In the present research, free convection heat transfer from isothermal concave and convex body shapes is studied numerically. The body shapes investigated here, are bi-sphere, cylinder, prolate and cylinder with hemispherical ends; besides, they have the same height over width (H/D = 2). A Numerical simulation is implemented to obtain heat transfer and fluid flow from all of the geometries in a...

Comparative evaluation between hypericin (hypiran) and fluoxetine in treatment of companion dogs with tail chasing

The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of hypericin and fluoxetine in the treatment of companion dogs with tail chasing in Ahvaz district. In the present survey, eighteen dogs with tail chasing were assigned into three equal groups for a three-year period. The dogs were randomly classified based on different treatment groups. During 15 weeks, dogs of group A were given 0.05 mg ...

Infants' perception of chasing.

Two significant questions in cognitive and developmental science are first, whether objects and events are selected for attention based on their features (featural processing) or the configuration of their features (configural processing), and second, how these modes of processing develop. These questions have been addressed in part with experiments focused on infants' perception of faces, huma...
